Water extraction is the removal of standing water from floors, carpets and cellars using pumps and extraction units. It is the first physical step after a leak or flood, and the faster it happens, the less water soaks into the building — which shortens drying time.
When you need water extraction
- Water pooled on floors after a burst pipe, tank or appliance leak.
- Carpets and underlay that squelch when you walk on them.
- A flooded cellar, basement or garage.
- Water trapped in a ceiling void or behind kitchen kickboards.
Equipment used
| Equipment | Used for |
|---|---|
| Submersible pumps | Deep standing water, such as a flooded cellar. |
| Wet vacuums and extraction units | Water on hard floors and shallow pooling. |
| Carpet extraction tools | Pulling water out of carpets and underlay. |
| Moisture meters | Checking where water has reached once the surface water has gone. |
How water extraction works
- Safety first. The supply is stopped and electrics in the wet area made safe.
- Bulk removal. Pumps or wet vacuums remove pooled water.
- Floor coverings. Carpets are extracted; underlay is often lifted, as it holds a lot of water.
- Hidden water. Ceiling voids, kickboard spaces and under-floor voids are checked and drained.
- Readings and drying. Once the free water has gone, structural drying deals with what has soaked in.
Why extraction matters
Removing liquid water is far quicker than evaporating it. Every litre pumped out is a litre that doesn’t have to be dried out of plaster and timber by dehumidifiers. Quick extraction also limits how far water wicks up walls and spreads under flooring.
Clean water or dirty water?
Extraction of clean water from a supply pipe is straightforward. Water from outside, drains or toilets is treated as contaminated — see flood damage restoration and sewage clean-up — and affected porous materials are normally removed.
What you can do before we arrive
- Turn off the water and, if safe, the electrics to the wet area.
- Lift furniture onto blocks or foil to stop staining.
- Move rugs, documents and electrical items out of the water.
- Don’t use a household vacuum cleaner on water.
